The States General of Cultural Diplomacy in Matera
We took part in the States General of Cultural Diplomacy held in Matera on 5 and 6 November. In the afternoon of Tuesday 5 November, our director Rita Orlando spoke on the panel ‘Culture is growth: Matera, a case study’, with a focus on ‘The European Capital of Culture: an instrument of diplomacy through art and culture’, in which she highlighted the European and international dimension of the Matera 2019 cultural programme thanks to the partnerships and collaborations built together with the creative scene in the area, the presence of artists who have come to Matera from all over the world, and the activation of projects on an international scale.
The States General of Cultural Diplomacy offered the perfect opportunity to strengthen the dialogue with Mediterranean institutions and communities, all the more so now that we have won the title of Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026.
After the experience of 2019, Matera continues to forge links and act as a reference point in cultural promotion, convinced that culture is the best vehicle for growth and social cohesion, but also a tool for dialogue in a new Europe that is increasingly a crossroads of peoples.
Matera hosted this prestigious event in the wake of its recent nomination as Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue for 2026, together with the Moroccan city of Tetouan. Announced on 28 October during the Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean in Barcelona, this nomination represents a new milestone for the city, which consolidates its role as a promoter of inclusiveness and intercultural dialogue, a reference point for Southern Italy and the Mediterranean area.
All the institutional representatives who spoke on the first day emphasised the importance of the double goal achieved by the city: the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, the Minister for Universities and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, the Minister for Institutional Reform and Regulatory Simplification, Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati, the Director General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy, Alessandro De Pedys, and the President of the Basilicata Region, Vito Bardi. It was pointed out that Matera, a city traversed over the millennia by peoples and cultures who have forged its genius loci, today offers a key to interpreting the contemporary that must be a shared heritage, increasingly accessible, also thanks to the work of the Italian Cultural Institutes abroad.
A new ambitious project for the Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation: Matera Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026
The proposed project for the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026 intends to share the legacy of 2019, made up of participation, inclusiveness, social integration and dialogue activated through the languages of culture, in order to further include the Mediterranean in the European dimension, also involving other communities in Southern Italy, in a common path of growth and experimentation. Through a programme of meetings, artistic residencies, collaborations and partnerships, a space is opened for reflection and the sharing of visions on crucial issues such as social inclusion and environmental challenges, the impact of migration, the new Euro-Mediterranean citizenship, the risks and opportunities represented by new immersive technologies and artificial intelligence, intertwined with the transformation of the Mediterranean landscape.
The project, characterised by an itinerant and participatory approach that will touch the various regions of Southern Italy, will unite different communities under the sign of cultural transhumance, a symbol of the primordial need for movement and the link between apparently distant territories. Matera "capitale delle terre immerse" will carry on a dialogue between coastal and inland culture, between the rural past and modern aspirations, turning the spotlight on territories still little explored. This multidimensional journey aims to overcome physical and cultural barriers, with great attention to cultural mediation and linguistic inclusion at all levels, enhancing the stratified and ever-changing identities of the Mediterranean, not as a unitary sea but as a complex mosaic of territories, histories and relations.
Matera 2019 at the conference of the European network Culture Next
From 16 to 18 October, the 13th Culture Next network conference was held in Cluj Napoca, Romania. It brought together representatives of 50 European cities and major cultural networks, together with representatives of the European Commission, local artists and cultural organisations from the Romanian city to share good practices and discuss collaborations on relevant European topics such as the New European Bauhaus, Culture and Resilience, and Culture and Well-being. Among the key topics was the Culture Goal, i.e. making culture the 18th SDG in the next UN Agenda, and the ECoC (European Capital of Culture) Reform to improve the European Union's European Capitals of Culture project.
On 17 October, on the occasion of the round table ‘Matera, 10 years of Capital’, dedicated to the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Matera's proclamation as European Capital of Culture 2019, we organised, as partners of the network, a video link with the Secretary General of Culture Next, ŞtefanTeişanu, who outlined the network's objectives and the themes of the conference, and with Beatriz Garcia, Associate Director of the Centre for Cultural Value, who analysed the new challenges for cities wishing to become European Capitals of Culture, 40 years after the institution of this title.
The link was coordinated by Serafino Paternoster, who attended the conference with ECoCNews, a Matera-based online newspaper founded in February 2021 by professionals who worked for Matera European Capital of Culture 2019. ECoCNews, the only newspaper entirely dedicated to the European Capitals of Culture, is now a media partner of Culture Next, contributing to report on its activities.

Culture Next is a network of 34 cities from 19 European countries, dedicated to present, past and future European Capitals of Culture and candidate cities. Founded in 2017, based in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, the network was created to contribute to have more ECoC (European Capital of Culture) programmes implemented in European cities and regions, regardless of whether they obtain the title or not, and to define a European, long-term vision on local development through culture and creativity.
We are a partner in this important European network and the benefits are numerous: exchange of information and expertise, specific for the needs of cities in different phases of the ECoC (European Capital of Culture ) candidacy; free access to the Network’s capacity building programme for cultural cities: an annual training programme (residencies, arts programmes, artists' mobility etc.) built on the needs of the members and funded through suitable European grants; involvement of cities and citizens in European affairs, with the possibility of increasing the European relevance and visibility of their work and their cities.

Il 17 ottobre del 2014 la città di Matera veniva proclamata Capitale Europea della Cultura per il 2019. Un annuncio accolto con una grande esplosione di gioia in una gremita piazza San Giovanni, in collegamento con la sede del Ministero della Cultura dove era riunita la Giuria di valutazione insieme ai rappresentanti delle sei città italiane finaliste per il titolo. Un ricordo indelebile nella mente di tutta la comunità lucana, un momento di svolta per il territorio intero, che da quel momento ha iniziato una grande trasformazione per prepararsi al grande appuntamento del 2019 e raccoglierne poi l’eredità.
A dieci anni da quel momento storico organizziamo con il sostegno di Regione Basilicata e Comune di Matera, in partnership con Ego55, TRM Network ed ECoCNews e la partecipazione dell’associazione Volontari Open Culture 2019, la tavola rotonda “Matera, 10 anni di Capitale” in programma il prossimo 17 ottobre dalle 10:30 alle 19:00 a Matera in Casa Cava, con l’obiettivo di tracciare un bilancio del percorso fatto dal 2014 sino ad oggi ed individuare nuovi obiettivi comuni per gli anni a venire.
Diversi i temi che trattiamo nel dibattito insieme ai rappresentanti di istituzioni ed enti pubblici nazionali e locali, oltre che insieme ad esperti, che ricoprono un ruolo chiave nel settore culturale e creativo a livello locale, nazionale e internazionale e nel progetto “Capitali Europee della Cultura”.

Il nostro Consiglio di Amministrazione ha approvato, nel corso dell’ultima riunione, l’Avviso Pubblico per l’acquisizione di manifestazioni di interesse per il conferimento dell’incarico del Direttore/della Direttrice Generale.
L’incarico sarà legato alle funzioni attribuite al Direttore/alla Direttrice Generale dall’articolo 18 dello Statuto della Fondazione e avrà durata di 3 (tre) anni.
La procedura selettiva non ha natura giuridica di concorso e la valutazione è rimessa alla discrezionalità del nostro Consiglio di Amministrazione il quale sceglie a insindacabile giudizio, rapportato all’alta fiduciarietà dell’incarico senza formulare una apposita graduatoria.
