Matera 2026 Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue

Matera 2026 Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue

Renowned for its transformative journey towards a thriving European Capital of Culture in 2019, Matera is now aiming to become one of the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture in 2026 together with the city Tetouan (Morocco). Drawing from its rich heritage and the success of its 2019 cultural programme, Matera is eager to share its legacy of inclusivity, social integration, and artistic collaboration. The city’s proposed 2026 programme, titled “Terre Immerse”, highlights the Mediterranean’s deep cultural and historical connections, even in areas without direct access to the sea. Matera will bring together diverse communities from southern Italy and beyond, fostering dialogue, knowledge sharing, and creative innovation across the Euro-Mediterranean region.

Matera’s story is one of profound resilience, notably revitalizing the historic Sassi through collaborative and visionary efforts. This remarkable urban regeneration, culminating in its 1993 UNESCO World Heritage recognition, showcases sustainable practices that balance preservation with innovation. The programme of Matera will include workshops and exhibitions focusing on these regenerative techniques, such as rainwater conservation systems and dry-stone wall construction.Matera’s transformation into a deep cultural hub has been fueled by the community’s commitment to art and tradition.

The 2026 programme will feature art festivals, film screenings, and live performances inspired by Matera’s legacy. Mediterranean artists and intellectuals will join in thematic residencies and cross-border art projects, fostering shared cultural narratives that deepen understanding and connection.

A core tenet of Matera’s mission is inclusivity and the active participation of its citizens. Matera will highlight community-driven events, such as open forums and participatory installations, to amplify local voices and inspire collective action. Partnerships with Mediterranean cities will encourage knowledge-sharing on sustainable development, culture, and technology, reinforcing Matera’s role as a bridge of dialogue and mutual growth.
