Matera 2026 Artist Residencies – projects take shape

Matera 2026 Artist Residencies – projects take shape

Following the two-day of co-design at Le Monacelle on 11 and 12 June and the one-to-one meetings hosted at our offices, the ten artistic residency projects that will animate Matera between September and November 2026 are taking shape, together with the profiles of the Euro-Mediterranean artists who will be selected to bring them to life.

The process involved the ten cultural organisations from Basilicata selected through CALL 1 of the artistic residency programme “Terre Immerse – Euromediterranean Creative Communities”.

The co-design activities aimed to refine the artistic concepts behind the residencies, define the technical aspects of the projects and jointly develop the selection criteria of profiles and content for CALL 2, which will be addressed to Euro-Mediterranean artists invited to live and work in Matera.

The ten selected local organisations – ASD Oltredanza, Associazione Gommalacca Teatro, Associazione Osmosis, Centro Mediterraneo delle Arti, Consorzio Materahub, Edinea, Fondazione SoutHeritage, Momart, Ombre Meridiane and Strane Nuvole – operate across a wide range of fields, including performing arts, photography, music, design, digital art and craftsmanship.

Between September and November 2026 the selected artists will create original works in dialogue with Matera’s tangible and intangible heritage and its local communities, fostering new cultural connections across the Mediterranean and leaving a lasting legacy for the city’s cultural and tourism offer.

The ten residency projects and CALL 2 for Euro-Mediterranean artists will be officially presented during a press conference to be held on Monday, 23 June at 11:00 a.m. in the Mandela Hall at Matera City Hall.

The artist residencies of the programme “Terre Immerse – Euromediterranean Creative Communities” are promoted by the Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019 for Matera 2026 Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue, in collaboration with the Municipality of Matera. The programme is funded by the Italian Ministry of Tourism and the Basilicata Region.
