A collective initiative that switches off the lights in the Sassi and kindles a sense of wonder, transforming the heart of the city into a shared space for contemplation and listening.


This is not merely a symbolic or evocative event: Matera Cielo Stellato is a civic and poetic gesture which, amidst soft lighting and rediscovered silence, prepares the city for a new year as the capital, once again making it a laboratory of culture, vision and community.

The performance involves the streets, homes and neighbourhoods of the Sasso Barisano, creating a visual dialogue between the urban landscape and the sky.
Residents and visitors can witness the ritual from one of the many vantage points or immerse themselves in the alleyways of the Sasso Barisano, walking through them amidst thousands of candles and small lights.
