Matera 2019

Materadio is back, for the fifth year and first year as the Capital.

This year we will be addressing particularly important topics: the relationship between generations, between innovation and bureaucracy and between the constructed town and its inhabitants. These topics played a decisive role in the candidacy dossier and are particularly close to the heart of our community, with its thousands of years of history and ability to look ahead.
The goal is to build a lasting and innovative path, able to make the community grow around unalterable values, but with the prospect of renewing actions and society.
Of course, all this cannot take place without the merriment, lightheartedness and good music that Materadio offers us every year. For this fifth edition, the RAI Radio3 festivity, scheduled to take place in Matera from 4 to 6 September 2015, will be hosting the musical duo from Mali, Amadou and Mariam, in concert with an extraordinary band of 10 musicians for their only performance in Italy during their European tour.

A number of other important guests will be present for this edition, which is the first as European Capital of Culture: Vinicio Capossela's narration set to music will converse with a detective story especially written by Maurizio de Giovanni and read by UBU Prize-winner Roberto Latini, the Urban Folk music of Canio Lo Guercio and the great Jazz of Franco D'Andrea.

A great many prestigious guests will be livening up the RAI Radio3 programmes that will be transmitted from the Casa Cava, from San Pietro Barisano and from Piazza San Giovanni. Like every year, one of the network's top programmes will be present - Fahrenheit, conducted by Loredana Lipperini – and it will have two days dedicated to the topics with which Matera became the capital, commented by personalities like Domenico de Masi and Mario Cucinella.

Among the guests expected to attend, there are the musicians and actors Mauro Ottolini, Sonig Tchakerian, Gemma Bertagnolli, Mariangela Gualtieri and Pasquale Innarella. There will be no lack of local artists either, such as guitarist Dino Plasmati and various startup companies from Basilicata talking about the Country and how the outlook of young people is changing with regard to work and business.

"Starting this year, we would like to talk about the path that a European Capital of Culture will build … and once again contribute to it, with a festivity like the one taking place in early September, which we hope will fill the squares, the halls, the houses and the caverns with the protagonists of our programmes and shows – and also with the ideas at the centre of our events this year. We think it will be useful to underline at least a couple of these. The first is about the towns, the transformations they are undergoing, the relationship that they maintain with their traditional identities, starting with the archaeological one, and the strength that they draw from this in order to face new challenges and new conflicts. The second is the relationship between generations and between experience and innovation; this is a very critical factor in the face of the crisis in the labour market. These are vast topics and crucial areas for the future of our country and perhaps not only of our country. The history of Matera, its unique identity, the way in which it is experiencing the challenges linked to change, makes it an exemplary place and almost a special workshop in which to talk about them".
