Matera 2019

For the seventh step towards 2019, Matera will dedicate the event called “Popoli in viaggio”(Peoples on a journey) to the Mediterranean. The program foresees the opening of the course “Corso di Alti Studi Mediterranei” (Course of Advanced Mediterranean Studies) – Jacques Maritain Chair, the extraordinary itinerant street performance by Pipotal theatre company as well as the evening’s concert by Eugenio Bennato.

On 19th July Matera will be the stage of a parade that will brighten up the city, from Piazza San Giovanni, through Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Via del Corso, Piazza San Francesco up to Via Ridola; Dancers, acrobats and jugglers will be the protagonists of “Deambuloscopie”, the itinerant performance by “Pipototal”, the French theatre company playing Balkanian urban-gypsy music with accordions, clarinets, saxophones, and percussions.

The notes will resound through the squares and main monuments of Matera, while the fireworks and the itinerant circus animated by acrobatics will lead the convoy of weird and burlesque characters who will drive machines made of cranks and gears inspired to the
world of dreams as well as to Leonardo Da Vinci’s work.

A show worth seeing but most of all worth experiencing.

Pipotal’s street performance will follow the conference on the Mediterranean and Interculture – the latter being the main topic of the day – that is scheduled at 4.30 pm at “Ex Ospedale San Rocco” where the “Corso di Alti Studi Mediterranei” will be opened. The course mentioned will be directed by the “Istituto Internazionale Jacques Maritain” (Jacques Maritain International Institute) in collaboration with the “Ufficio Sistemi Culturali e Turistici” (Tourist and Cultural System Office), Cooperazione Euromediterranea of the Basilicata Region and with the University of Basilicata.

At 9.00 pm the show “Il Mediterraneao tra arte e intercultura” (The “Mediterranean between Art and Interculture”) will be performed at the park in front of “Castello Tramontano” where Matera will discover the beauty of Mediterranean Arts featuring the diversity of the people living in the Mediterranean area.

Four evening performances are scheduled on the evening programme: the opening concert by Miky Del Cambio, a piano player and singer songwriter from Basilicata, the reading of the poems by Raïssa Maritain, performed by the actors Gian Carlo Dettori and Franca Nuti and the concert by Seven Doors and JY Blues, two young Maroccan bands included in the Tabadoul project.

The programme will end with the concert “Da che sud è sud” by the Italian singer and songwriter Eugenio Bennato who took the main inspiration for his art from the Mediterranean.
All the events are promoted by the Istituto Internazionale Jacques Maritain and Matera-Basilicata 2019 Foundation in collaboration with the “Ufficio Sistemi Culturali e Turistici” Cooperazione Euromediterranea of the Basilicata Region, the University of Basilicata, and
the Centro Studi e Ricerche di Pedagogia Sociale (Research Centre of Social Pedagogy) – Istituto Nazionale Jacques Maritain from Potenza with the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism and with the patronage of the Municipality of Matera.
