One of the pillar projects of the Matera 2019 cultural program is I-DEA, conceived as an "archive of archives and collections", a public institution devoted to the investigation and representation of the rich cultural and anthropological history of the Basilicata region through exhibitions, performances, research programs and an online digital platform.
To draw inspiration, compare and share useful practices and know-how to launch and implement the I-DEA project, the Matera-Basilicata 2019 Foundation and the DiCEM (Department of European Cultures and of the Mediterranean) of the University of Basilicata have organized the "Food for Art - Archives as a driver for 2019 creative communities" international conference, that will be held on 11th -12th September 2017 at the Casa Cava in Matera.
The practice of using materials from public and private collections in exhibitions is rapidly growing at both European and international level. Among the best-known and most interesting examples, there are works by artists such as Armin Linke (conference host), Erik Kessels, Hans Ulrich Obrist and the operations carried out by major European museum institutions such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Basilicata is fertile ground for this type of operation: Basilicata is a region of collectors, and over the decades countless individuals, citizens associations, private organizations, public institutions and foundations have assembled unique archives and collections dealing with every aspect of Southern and Italian culture, from contemporary art to tourist ephemera and from 20th century cinema to farming tools. I-DEA will provide a platform for the discovery and interpretation of these archives. Its institutional mission will first and foremost be to assist the keepers of archives in the task of preserving their collections as a repository of collective memory for the region. Secondly, it will undertake the task of indexing contents according to a common archival structure as well as making materials available online to facilitate research. Thirdly, it will establish a platform in Matera for public exhibitions that cut a cross-section through the materials contained in this “archive of archives”, finding new relationships and establishing new interpretations of history and culture in the South.
I-DEA is in part inspired by the "Rolywholyover A Circus" composition for museum with which the composer, writer, philosopher, and visual artist John Cage transformed the Philadelphia Museum of Art into the setting for a constantly changing array of art, performances, film and video screenings, readings, and special programs using elements borrowed from approximately 30 other museums. Going beyond the understanding of the museum as a static space for the preservation of cultural artefacts, through the notion of a museum as a public platform for discussion and interpretation, I-DEA is an alternative paradigm, to create a process of interpretation that will be intentionally subjective rather than scientific, in which guest curators will be invited to propose their own interpretations in the form of temporary exhibitions that explore the history, culture and anthropology of Matera, Basilicata and Southern Italy.
The international conference program is open to anthropologists, museum directors, curators of archives and collections, experts of creative commons, local and international curators, and will be divided into four sessions with presentations by national and international experts: archives, a common good to be shared: ethics, accessibility, usability; anthropology and archives; artistic practices and archives; archives and museums of the third millennium. The conference will also be enriched by performances, screenings and workshops on the reinterpretation of the most varied archive materials that become a source of inspiration for artists, anthropologists, writers, thinkers, composers, philosophers and designers.
