A dialogue between Matera’s acoustics and the Mediterranean’s sonic memory.
EKHO II is an Open Studio exploring the evolution of the sound research conducted by Sara Persico for the EKHO project by Collettivo NEA, as part of the “Terre Immerse” Artist Residency Programme within Matera Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026. The event will explore the musical traditions of Tétouan, the Moroccan city twinned with Matera, through listening sessions featuring selected audio excerpts, an introduction to some of its most emblematic musical instruments, and an exploration of the possibilities for transforming and reworking sound.
Sound processing techniques will be presented, with a particular focus on Sound Thread / Composers Desktop Project (CDP).
The session will demonstrate how the sounds of a traditional instrument can become the starting point for new timbral and compositional possibilities.
Given the complexity of the topics covered, ranging from the analysis of musical structures and techniques rooted in Mediterranean traditions to composition and sound design, the Open Studio is particularly suited to music and sound professionals, as well as enthusiasts interested in the field.
