L’Utopia che non vide la Merica

A documentary-photographic exhibition dedicated to the shipwreck of the steamship Utopia. The exhibition is inspired by the historical essay Utopia Through the Mists of Memory: Notes on a Shipwreck, published in 2024 by Marotta & Cafiero Editori and distributed by Mondadori. The book received an Honourable Mention at the 2025 Premio Letterario Nazionale Città di Grottammare – Franco Loi.

Through a narrative journey built around historical documents, archival photographs and interpretative materials, the exhibition seeks to restore dignity and preserve the memory of the approximately 600 victims of the tragedy of 17 March 1891, with particular attention to those from the Basilicata region and the city of Matera.
