MUSIC LESSONS + CONCERT
Exercises in Style: Variations and Metamorphoses in Music, Past and Present
With Michele dall’Ongaro and Emanuele Arciuli, piano
In Exercises in Style (Exercices de style, 1947), Raymond Queneau tells a trivial story in 99 different ways, plunging it into a whirlwind of variations in technique, style and genre. The idea was inspired by listening to a set of symphonic variations, probably Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Together with pianist Emanuele Arciuli, Michele dall’Ongaro will explore both famous and lesser-known works dedicated to the theme-and-variations form, perhaps revealing how processes of metamorphosis and transformation are closely connected to our everyday lives, and how existence itself can sometimes seem like an endless series of variations on a given theme. ZAZÀ
With Nicola Lagioia and Alessandro Vanoli. Live music by RedNilo. Hosted by Piero Sorrentino
Santa Barbara. Where Stories Come From. With Nicola Lagioia
Set in an imaginary version of Capurso, in an archaic Southern Italy suspended between myth and history, Nicola Lagioia’s novel Santa Barbara (published by Einaudi) follows the lives of its protagonists, Nunzia and Nicola, against the backdrop of a South marked by poverty, war and an inescapable fate. The novel delves into the soul of a Southern Italy that is archaic yet eternally alive. What has become of the Southern Question in Italy’s public debate? Amid population decline, brain drain and increasingly deep inequalities in healthcare, Southern Italy risks once again becoming a ghost macro-region, forgotten by politics. Yet, while the economy and public services decline, the South continues to exert an extraordinary and paradoxical “dominance over the collective imagination” in Italian culture and cinema. The programme explores precisely this divide: is Southern Italy destined to suffer an irreversible decline into marginality, or does it still hold the ideas and vitality needed to understand and rethink the future of Italy and Europe as a whole? Da Matera si vede il mare. Una lunga storia di scambi mediterranei
Written and performed by Alessandro Vanoli
The episode opens up a space for theatrical storytelling with Alessandro Vanoli’s performance dedicated to the Mediterranean, a historical and cultural reflection that journeys across the shores and identities of mare nostrum. Completing Zazà’s sonic journey is the music of RedNilo, a collaboration between Italian-Moroccan artist Reda Zine and Malian griot Kalifa Kone. Their dialogue between voice, guitar and percussion blends African and Mediterranean roots, tracing pathways of cultural exchange and dialogue among peoples. (Italian language)

VOCI IN BARCACCIA. Il respiro delle corde
With Carlos Reynoso, baritone
Annalisa Orlando, piano
Gian Marco Ciampa, guitar
With the participation of students from the Egidio Romualdo Duni Conservatory of Music in Matera
Hosted by Andrea Penna
A musical journey born from the breath of strings, exploring two worlds that are only seemingly distant: the guitar and the human voice. The concert unfolds in two parts. Opening the programme is guitarist Gian Marco Ciampa, a performer of extraordinary sensitivity who transforms the instrument’s six strings into a story of rhythm, colour and poetry. In the second part, the strings become vocal cords with an operatic recital by Mexican baritone Carlos Reynoso, accompanied on piano by Annalisa Orlando. Reynoso is the winner of the fifth edition of Voci in Barcaccia. Largo ai giovani!, Rai Radio 3’s competition dedicated to the new generations of opera singers, now in its sixth edition. Two instruments, two forms of expression, one shared breath: from the vibrations of the guitar to the human voice, the concert presents music as a living art form, capable of bringing together languages, cultures and generations.
9:00 PM – 10:30 PM | Piazza Vittorio Veneto
CONCERT. CARMEN CONSOLI
Sulle ferite aperte
Annalisa Orlando, piano
Monologue by Francesca Ritrovato. Presented by Valerio Corzani
Carmen Consoli takes centre stage in a special event where singer-songwriter music meets socially engaged theatre. From her latest album Amuri Luci to her most beloved classics, the unmistakable voice of the Sicilian singer-songwriter, recently awarded the Tenco Prize for Best Album in Dialect, intertwines with an intense monologue by actress and playwright Francesca Ritrovato, creating an evening of profound reflection. On stage, accompanying Carmen Consoli’s voice and guitar, will be the musical textures of Massimo Roccaforte (guitar and mandolin) and the refined elegance of strings, performed by Emilia Belfiore on violin and Claudia Della Gatta on cello. The text performed will be Leonilde, taken from Francesca Ritrovato’s production Alienate. Drawing on the historical archives of the former Psychiatric Hospital of Girifalco, in Calabria, the author restores voice and dignity to women pushed to the margins of society.
Among them is Leonilde, who was confined for forty-three years because she had run away for love. The emotional intensity of Carmen Consoli’s songwriting merges with a story of popular, social and personal resistance. A musical and theatrical journey that combines the raw power of acoustic music with the weight of memory, bringing forgotten lives back into the light and celebrating freedom and human dignity in the heart of Matera.
